What is the major obsession with teacup/miniature dogs?!?

it really annoys me when people start boasting that they have a 'teacup' dog! Yeah small dogs are adorable, but so are big dogs - my old dog was the size of a GSD and he was wonderful. I've got nothing against small dogs, but why are people so obsessed with them?
