Driving from Orlando to New York in January? safe? bad idea?

My best friend is from Corning, NY. I live in San Diego... I'm debating whether or not i should join him in the drive from Orlando to Corning in the early parts of January. I'd love to, however I'm not sure how safe flying, much less driving, is in the midst of chaotic winters. Advice?
