Gloria Steinem as a CIA et- What was behind this?

One of my friends had a Gloria Steinem quote on her facebook page, and I curiously began to research her. I was wondering exactly what her role as a CIA et was, and why people don't seem to be very critical or ystical of this. Doesn't it seem like quite a big deal if the CIA was funding and/or manipulating 'grroots' movements?
