How do sonograms work?

I'm only like 3 weeks - one month pregnant...can anyone explain the steps of pregnancy for me? Like how far into the pregnancy should I get a sonogram done and what shows up on it, and what kinds of things should I look out for, that kind of stuff? anything extra would be great
